Generative Chemistry & Generative Biology for Drug Discovery

Alex Zhavoronkov coined both terms — 'generative chemistry' and 'generative biology' — to describe the use of deep generative models for de novo molecular design and biological target discovery. His group pioneered GANs for molecular generation (druGAN, ORGAN, 2016–2018), culminating in the 2019 GENTRL paper (Nature Biotechnology) — the first AI-designed DDR1 kinase inhibitor, generated and validated in just 21 days.
